Video is a powerful marketing tool, and as the video industry evolves so do your options in how to market your company. After seeing Mercury’s own demo reel, McGowan Crain, a St. Louis-based advertising and marketing agency, hired Mercury’s production team to create a video demo for their agency to use as part of a new business pitch. Video Ideas Hot Off the Press
Google this week announced they are introducing a video application into Google Apps. Google Video for Business allows a company's employees to upload and share video clips with the same ease as posting a clip to YouTube. One neat feature is Scene Browser, a series of thumbnails that a user can click on to watch a specific segment within a video. Click here to read more about this new application.
In other news this week, Media Post talks about the benefit of creating your own private media channel on your website. Click here to read about why it's a good idea for your company to use video on your website - to control your message, emotionally engage viewers and bring your product to life. As the article says, how do you then get prospects to your site to check out all this great video content? Well, one way is to use outbound emails with embedded videos (like the one you're reading now) to increase conversion and click-through rates.
Divine or Decline?
Mercury has a monthly video pick with a chance for you to vote on whether an idea was well executed as a video. Because contrary to what your teacher told you, some ideas are just plain bad. Others are brilliant. This month's pick is a GEICO spot featuring Don LaFontaine, the famous movie voice guy who recently passed away. Is it divine, or do you decline the brilliance of the idea? Respond back to this email report with your vote.

Ideas in Action: McGowan Crain Agency Demo
Business Objective: Communicate an ad agency’s core capabilities in order to win additional business from a key existing customer.
Situation: St. Louis advertising agency McGowan Crain has the motto: “Simple. Smart. Strategic.” So when they wanted to highlight their abilities as an agency, they applied that marketing philosophy inward. Why tell people what you can do when you can show them with a dynamic video that proved to be simple, smart and strategic? McGowan Crain also had an attractive office space with design capabilities from idea to the printed page on-site, thus providing a perfect scenario for a behind-the-scenes agency tour.
The Mercury Solution: McGowan Crain brought Mercury in to help visually elaborate their idea to take viewers on a journey of a mock design project. Mercury translated the agency’s concept into a dynamic capabilities video. The completed video took viewers on a choreographed agency tour to meet the people behind the advertising. The video illustrated the creative process from brainstorming to production to finished product, while at the same time showcasing past work and demonstrating the agency’s capabilities. The finished product was a fast-paced and stylish demo reel that both educated and entertained.
Timeline: 4 weeks
Results: “We came to Mercury with several concepts on how to use video to define our breadth of work, and they brought our ideas to life on the big screen,” said Ben Crain, Principal at McGowan Crain. “We have been able to leverage this demo in several capacities and were able to secure several new business projects as a direct result.”
Further Accolades: “The McGowan Crain Experience” video was recognized with an award of distinction in the 2008 Videographer Awards, an international awards program directed by communication professionals to honor talented individuals and companies in the video production field.
And That’s A Wrap…
Spencer Day’s music video Movie of Your Life, produced, directed and shot by Mercury’s Chris Lawing and Sean Mitchell, walked away with Most Creative Film Award and Best Visual Effects Award at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. More than 70 films made by filmmakers of all ages participated in this year’s showcase. Lawing took the honors for directing this silver screen debut for music artist Spencer Day.
Movie of Your Life takes viewers on a musical journey with Day starring as the pianist at an old movie theater who sings his heart out to a moviegoer who catches his eye. Together, the romantic duo play out scenes of some of the most beloved films of all time, including Citizen Kane, Casablanca and Singin’ in the Rain. Laden with visual effects and an impressive homage to classic films, Movie of Your Life makes a splash as both a music video and a pure visual treat.
The Eighth Annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase (SLFS), presented by nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, screened works that were written, directed, edited or produced by St. Louis natives or those with strong local ties. The St. Louis Film Critics, an association of professional critics in the metropolitan area, select the award winners each year.
The winning piece now goes onto the St. Louis International Film Festival that will run November 13-23, 2008.
